With the elaborate, exotic style of previous OLG projects failing to keep local Ontario markets interested, Ajax Downs realized they needed a fresh approach to jump-start their new facility. Consequently, the mackaywong design team set about the task of developing a creative direction that conveyed a sense of place and local identity.
Combinations of natural stone in polished and honed patterns express a sense of rawness and finish that coexist throughout each area. The use of natural materials on walls and floor finishes lend a permanence and weight to the interiors. In sharp contrast, the gaming floors typical electric buzz inspired the inclusion of full height, high-tech LED glass walls that feature constant animated colour throughout the lobby and the gaming floor. The design concept for this facility is an interplay of juxtapositions that explores the relationship of nature in a developing world.
