Cineplex Entertainment is bringing its new “social destination” for dining and entertainment to Toronto’s historic John Street Roundhouse.
Construction will begin this summer on The Rec Room, which combines dining, gaming, live acts and recreational games under one roof.
The venture, The Rec Room’s third announced location, will take over the Leon’s Furniture site at 255 Bremner Blvd. The first two, slated for Edmonton and Calgary, will open this spring and winter, respectively.
Cineplex plans on launching 10 to 15 locations of The Rec Room over the next five years.
Toronto is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2017.
The concept is designed to appeal to young adults and families, as well as corporate events and group parties.
The Toronto edition, located opposite the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium and Rogers Centre, will measure about 40,000 sq. ft. It will include an upscale casual restaurant; a bar area with a massive high-definition screen; recreational activities such as pool, shuffleboard and ping pong, and an auditorium-style space suited to live entertainment such as comedy and musical acts.
The Rec Room concept is described as a natural expansion for Cineplex which operates 160 theatres serving about 77 million guests a year.
